The parish of St Brigids was founded in 1896, and our first parish priest - Father James Humble - was appointed by Charles Peter Eyre, first Archbishop of Glasgow following the restoration of the hierarchy in 1878. The young Father Humble was later to become famous in Catholic circles as the long serving rector of the Scottish seminary in Spain (1909-1940).
In 1996-97 St Brigids celebrated its Centenary Year. To mark the event a brochure was produced with the very apt title Humble Origins The brochure is presented here in the Adobe pdf format. This requires the free Adobe Acrobat software on your pc. To download this software click here.
The author of the Centenary Brochure was a parishioner by the name of John Dougan. It was a mammoth task, and one he carried out single handedly. John wisely avoided all discussion or debate about who should - or should not - be profiled in the brochure. He was fond of saying that the privilege of appearing in the brochure was restricted to the clergy - and parishioners who were no longer living. So, he would say If you want to appear in the brochure you have a choice...
Sadly, barely two years
later, at the age of 51 John himself died very suddenly and unexpectedly.
May he rest in peace.
